Temporary Food Service Establishments and Farmer’s Markets – Operator Guidelines (PDF)

Here is a recap of vendor responsibilities and requirements:

  • Vendors will need a sales tax permit (Non-profits are exempt. You must show proof of non-profit status for exemption.)
  • Every vendor selling food must have a food license.
  • All vendors must provide proof of $1,000,000 General Liability Insurance (with RAGBRAI Altoona listed as additional insured or additional interest) with their application
  • Wondering what to serve? The top 10 dinner foods, according to RAGBRAI, are: Lasagana with meat, spaghetti with meat, grilled chicken, BBQ, pizza, baked potato, steak sandwich, turkey and noodles, Mexican, beef and noodles
  • Wondering what not to serve? RAGBRAI advises staying away from ham, brats, hot dog, hamburgers fruit and Gatorade. Many pass through towns are serving those foods. Riders want a full meal at night.
  • 5% of all RAGBRAI riders are vegetarians
  • Wondering how many you can serve? Figure your hours, how many you can seat, and how long people will take will eat. For instance:
  • Open 4 hours, can seat 150 at once, people will take 45 minutes to eat=serving about 750 to 800 meals
  • This is going to be HUGE, let’s buy more food!—Not so fast. If you want to make money, it’s going to be smarter and more profitable, to run out of food than have leftovers you have to throw away.
  • When should we be open? Riders are early to rise and work hard during the day. They will start eating dinner around 4:30 p.m. Plan to be busy beginning about 5 p.m. Some vendors should plan to stay open until about 10 p.m.

Non-profit/local within the SE Polk school district – $150.00
Non-profit/outside the SE Polk school district – $350.00
Local for profit – $300.00
All others – $800.00
Clean up deposit (*required) – $150.00
Electricity/110 amps – $50
Electricity/220 amps – $100

    My wife and I are starting an Italian Ice Business this summer and would very much like to be apart of the Altoona Ragbrai celebration. Italian Ice is not a snow cone, it is much different. We live in Pleasant Hill and We look foreword to hearing back from you and hope we can make Ragbrai a big success for Altoona.

  6. We are a mobile kitchen. We have set up at RAGBRAI towns for the last 4 years. We would like to have the opportunity to set up again for all the towns.

    I know it is early to start thinking about events in July but for us it feels like I am already behind in getting things together for the new season.

    So could you put me in touch with the person or committee in charge of the RAGBRAI event that would be great.

    My wife and I have “Smoke in your Eyes BBQ”. A local catering and vending business. We are residents of Altoona. We vended at the Palooza last year. We are strong supporters of our local community. I also operate a local business, Trailer Innovations and On-Site Fleet Services. We would like to vend at Ragbrai with our partner Moe Cason from the Pitmaster TV show. We would do some BBQ along with other sandwiches, fried items and minimal desserts.
